He has a long sports career after having driven in about 400 events

Amaral began in the 1960s racing at the wheel of a Hillman Imp but he has also raced on circuits, hill climbs and off-road rallies.

It was in Angola that he officially entered car racing when he premièred at the commands of a Mitsubishi Colt 1100 in 1971. Three years later he returned to Lisbon, where he got a Renault 12TS that he raced in for four seasons.

Between 1978 and 1988 he raced in a wide range of vehicles including a Toyota KE25, Hillman Imp, Simca Rallye 2, Alpine Turbo, Renault 5 GT Turbo, Renault 11 Turbo II. He was a pioneer in the mythical Caramulo Hill Climb, which he fought at the wheel of a Hillman Imp.

He raced off-road in 1988 with a VW 1302 S. In 1989 Amaral ended nine of the ten rallies when he was driving a Citroën AX Sport winning the class eight times and even premièred a UMM Alter 2 in the Portalegre race.
