Hipólito Pires was one of the creators of the Portaro in 1975, the first Portuguese off-road vehicle. He led SHA until 2003, being largely responsible for establishing the Spanish brand in Portugal. He also had Daihatsu under his wing. The driver also created the fondly remembered Marbella Trophy, which contributed to the emergence of national drivers renowned for their track records, such as Rui Madeira.
